Metallography is the study of the physical structure of metals and alloys by methods such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Metallography is used to identify defects, discontinuities and material features, The testing may be performed by macro examination at low magnifications on an etched specimen or by micro examination on a cut, polished, etched and mounted sample.
