Magnetic Particle TestingMagnetize to Find Discontinuities
Surface and near-surface defects can be identified in ferromagnetic materials using magnetic particle testing services (MT). Magnetic particle testing is a very sensitive nondestructive test method. The test is performed by spreading either wet or dry particles with high magnetic permeability over a test piece as it is magnetized, causing the particles to collect at discontinuities such as cracks, laps and seams. Defects distort the surrounding magnetic field, which causes the particles to be drawn to them.
Fluorescent wet magnetic particle testing is performed most often at LTI because it contains smaller particles and a liquid carrier for convenient spray application and better flow to small leakage fields. These test samples are viewed under UV lighting in our inspection equipment that can handle products up to 12 ft. long and has a maximum output of 6,300 amps. Dry powder magnetic particle testing services are used most often in the field for convenience.
