Surface and near surface discontinuities can be identified using magnetic particle testing services (MT) in products that can be magnetized. Either wet or dry particles with high magnetic permeability are spread over a test piece as it is magnetized, causing them to collect at discontinuities such as cracks, laps and seams. Fluorescent wet magnetic particle testing is performed most often at LTI because it contains smaller particles and a liquid carrier for convenient spray application and better flow to small leakage fields. Our equipment can handle products up to 12 ft. long and has a maximum output of 6,300 amps. Dry powder magnetic particle testing services are used most often in the field for convenience.
