LTI Performs Testing for RoHS Directive

Laboratory Testing Inc. now offers material testing and analysis for RoHs Compliance. The RoHS Directive was drawn up in the European Union to protect human health and the environment from hazardous substances. The directive applies to most manufacturers, sellers, distributors and recyclers of the following products:

  • Household appliances
  • IT or telecom equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electrical & electronic tools & equipment
  • Toys, leisure & sports equipment
  • Automatic dispensers

The Directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in these products that are sold in the European Union market after July 1, 2006. Any of the specified products that contain more than the permitted level of the following hazardous materials may not be placed on the European Market:

  • Lead
  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent chromium
  • Mercury
  • Polybrominated biphenyls
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers

To assure compliance, the material can be verified through testing. LTI can analyze a sample for lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and mercury. Although we do not analyze for the other two compounds specifically, a test for total bromine can determine that the material meets RoHS requirements, if it is less than the highest limit for the most Bromine rich compound.
